Moscow Program -> Activities & Events

Program Dates:  Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15, 2008

Program activities and events which will be included in this program have been designed for the serious student of Russian art and history as well as individuals who simply want an in-depth understanding of Moscow, the capital city of Russia and “heart” of this vast country.  “The Heart of Russia” will build on the foundation of understanding begun in the St. Petersburg Program at Pavlovsk.

  • Experience the historic “Red Arrow” overnight train from St. Petersburg to Moscow and, after a night in a comfortable double-occupancy roomette, awake for a full day of activities in Moscow.
  • Learn about Moscow, this great capital city which, except during the Romanov Dynasty, has always been the political, commercial, economic and cultural center of the great Russian Empire.
  • Visit The Kremlin including, through special arrangement, the Grand Kremlin Palace, the Private Imperial Apartments, the Palace of Facets and the Terem Palace.
  • Through special arrangement with the staff of Patriarch Alexei, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, you will hear the incredible history of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, demolished by Stalin and recently rebuilt.
  • View Red Square, its cathedrals, its famous emporium, “GUM”, and other universally-recognizable landmarks.
  • Enjoy what is probably the most comprehensive collection of Russian art through the ages, The Tretyakov Gallery, which began as a private collection and was “privatized” by the Bolsheviks.
  • Visit Manezh Square with its three floors of elegant underground shops and eateries.

Moscow is a city of endless enchantment and energy, combining the old with the new in a rich blend of styles and cultures.  With its tradition of commerce, artistic excellence and entertainment, Russia’s capital offers incomparable shopping, dining, nightlife and opportunities for interaction with “locals” – artists, executives, students, scholars….

There will also be time to sample Russian cuisine and to attend a performance which eloquently depicts the beauty and pathos of this great country.

Throughout, you will be accompanied by and learn from notable scholars, experts, historians and residents of Moscow who intimately know and love their incomparable city.
